FAQ

Antioxidant activity

Free radicals bearing oxygen called ROS (reactive oxygen species) are generated in the biomembrane. While such free radicals remain, they oxidise the surrounding molecules, generating lipoperoxides which damage the biomembrane. Vitamin E scavenges free radicals and inhibits oxidation and as a result, generation of lipoperoxide is suppressed, i.e. it has antioxidant activity. Among the four kinds of tocopherols, the order of strength of antioxidant activity in vivo is as follows: α>β>γ>δ. α-Tocopherol is the strongest.
